New Orleans Family Friendly Restaurants

Bring wet wipes for the kids, who will undoubtedly end up covered in powdered sugar when they try Cafe du Monde's world-famous beignets. You'll get three beignets with each order, so unless your family is very hungry (or very large), one order should be plenty. Be prepared to wait for your sugary balls of fried dough; for the better part of the day, the line at this iconic eatery with powdered sugar-covered floors is out the door. Cafe Du Monde's coffee, flavored with chicory (a New Orleans tradition) and hot milk, is a popular choice for parents.

Have a simple, satisfying lunch or breakfast at this charming sidewalk cafe in the French Quarter. Mouth-watering baked goods available here include delicate, flaky croissants of various flavors (try the almond), plenty of pastries, plus an ever-changing menu of daily soup specials and hot sandwiches.

Bam! Famous chef Emeril Lagasse -- who hails from the Big Easy -- serves up tasty Southern-inspired dishes at his namesake restaurant. Munch on barbeque shrimp, "Emeril's Burger" (served with Southern slaw and BBQ-short-rib jam), Gulf seafood Bolognese and dozens of other creative dishes for lunch or dinner at Emeril's. At the end of your meal, choose from a fantastic selection of decadent desserts (Emeril's banana cream pie, anyone?). There isn't a kids' menu here, but the chef will happily accommodate children with items like grilled cheese and chicken fingers. Reservations are recommended.

Seeking classic New Orleans seafood? Bring the gang to Oceana Grill (it's just off Bourbon street), a popular joint for seafood aficionados of all ages. You can get the restaurant's "famous" oysters here, cooked on an open flame with garlic and Creole sauce, plus other local favorites like seafood gumbo and crawfish. The restaurant has a kids' menu with the regular items -- chicken strips, cheeseburgers and fried fish.
307 Exchange PlaceNew Orleans, LA 504-301-3347
An upscale restaurant with amazing outdoor seating, vegetarian-friendly Green Goddess serves up classic New Orleans dishes -- with a twist. A variety of eclectic dishes are on offer for lunch or dinner, from Gulf shrimp and grits to grilled Georgia peaches with blue cheese and bacon. There's no kids' menu here, but youngsters are sure to like the restaurant's famous French duck fat home fries, and a side of cheesy grits ($3) plus an order of sweet potato biscuits with orange honey butter ($3) makes an affordable, kid-friendly lunch.
