It's always good to have choices on a family vacation, and Newport, Oregon, gives you plenty of them. As one of the bigger towns on the Oregon coast, the area around Newport lets you plan a day to relax or a day to stay busy. Your family can sit on the beach and build sand castles, book a whale-watching tour, or visit a world-class aquarium to gawk at sharks.

Yet, Newport is still a small town. No activity, attraction, or restaurant is more than a few minutes away from your hotel. Newport is bordered on the north and south by beautiful state parks, which provide free and easy access to miles of uncrowded white sand beaches. Walking and biking trails, leading to tidepools and hidden caves, are everywhere. You and your family will have no problem getting close to nature.

But the unique thing about Newport is that it's home to one of Oregon's largest commercial fishing fleets, which makes for some fascinating sights and sounds around town. Kids will love learning how all that fish gets on their plate. On Newport's historic bayfront, where the ships unload their haul for processing, it's easy to see how it all comes together. The city is also home to a marine science center and one of the best ocean aquariums in the country, where you can give your kids a little education to go with their relaxation.

As with any coastal town, seafood is plentiful. Newport is home to a number of affordable and family-friendly restaurants serving up fresh catch-of-the-day and more. With several large grocery stores in town, you have choices if you need a break from eating out. Newport is a bustling community, and a little more crowded than the smaller towns along the Oregon coast. That just gives you more to do, and more to plan. Your family vacation memories will be filled with variety, from walking to the top of Oregon's tallest lighthouse to listening to the singing rocks at Cobble Beach to watching an octopus eat its dinner. That's the beauty of a place like Newport.
