U.S. Airlines Raise Fares on Domestic Flights

See recent posts by Amanda Geronikos

In the past week, the five biggest airlines in America — JetBlue, Delta, US Airways, American and Southwest — have raised base fares on domestic flights.

JetBlue began the trend, increasing fares by $4; the others followed suit shortly thereafter. The move suggests there’s a large demand for air travel (or there will be), but comes as a surprise following a recent drop in fuel costs, in addition to fears surrounding Ebola.

It’s unclear whether the increase will affect leisure travelers, including families, since airlines frequently change fees based on sales, demand for specific flights and other factors.
