Best known as the home to Okemo Ski Area, Ludlow sits at the base of the Green Mountains in the south-central part of Vermont. A three-hour drive from Boston and 4.5 hours from New York, Okemo has been a family-favorite for generations. The 3,344-foot peak boasts impeccably groomed trails that can turn the worst of New England winter weather into comfortable cruisers. It's a great mountain for intermediate skiers, who can choose from a wide assortment of blues and easy blacks that snake down the face of the peak. Yet, many novices have also learned to ski here from the highly regarded ski instructors.

Okemo has built up its facilities over the years to accommodate both non-skiers and skiers alike. New this winter is the Timber Ripper Mountain Coaster, a sleek European-designed alpine slide that zips down the hillside in a blur of tall pines and firs. Near the Jackson Gore Hotel, you'll find a skating rink. Down the road, heading into town, you'll find the Okemo Valley Nordic Center for cross-country skiers and snowshoers. This being Vermont, hiking and biking are excellent in the summer months. Other diversions include a visit to the Vermont Country Store in nearby Weston to stock up on local maple syrup, cheeses, and other Vermont handicrafts.
