Getting There
Coming from Boston, the best way to reach Okemo is to take Route 2 West to Route 140 North and then to Route 12 North. Bypass the town of Keene, N.H. and continue North on Route 12. Cross the Connecticut River at Bellows Falls, Vt., then take I-91 North for one exit, to Exit 6 and Route 103 North. Stay on Route 103 North for 24 miles to Ludlow.

From New York, head north on I-91 to Exit 6 in Vermont and continue with the directions above.

Getting Around
Since the Okemo ski area is not smack dab in the center of Ludlow, it's necessary to have a car, especially if you want to travel to nearby sites like the Calvin Coolidge Homestead in Plymouth or the Vermont Country Store in Weston. In summer, you can travel inn-to-inn on a bike.

The Art of Smart Timing
The most crowded times of the year are Christmas Week, the Martin Luther King, Jr. 3-day weekend and President's Week in February. All other times, I've never experienced long lift lines. Anytime in summer is ideal. Ski areas in the off-season are an affordable retreat, where slopeside condos and the nearby hotels are all greatly reduced from the prime of winter.

Off the Radar
On Saturday nights, book a babysitter with the Jackson Gore Inn and go on a romantic dinner on the mountain. Okemo will pick up couples by Snowcat and drop them off at Epic Restaurant for a five-course dinner. Cost is $125 per person.
