Outer Banks Planning & Tips
Getting There and Around
The Outer Banks of North Carolina are 90 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia, and 321 miles north of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. From Virginia, you can reach them from Highways 168 and 158 and, in North Carolina, by Highway 64.

The closest major commercial airport to the Outer Banks is Norfolk International Airport, located 90 miles north. American, Continental, Delta, Southwest and AUS Airways all service the airport. There are several smaller regional airports closer by, as well.

The Art of Smart Timing
Many of the smaller coastal towns like Corolla and Duck almost close down during winter, although you can still rent houses and find some hotels open in the larger towns like Nags Head.

The period from March through October is a lovely time to visit. July through September remains the peak tourist season. Even with the summer rush, the Outer Banks don't have the crowded feel of some other coastal destinations.

North Carolina has been known to suffer the effects of late-summer and early-fall hurricanes that rarely, but sometimes, hit the Eastern Seaboard.
