Overview

The Palmer House is an upscale hotel located in the heart of downtown Chicago. Guests enjoy lavishly decorated European-style rooms and suites with dark wood accents and marble bathrooms. More than 1,600 renovated units offer standard amenities such as desks, bath products and comfortable bedding. Suites also present a separate sleeping room, a parlor area and a dining area. Connecting rooms are optional and video game consoles are available for a surcharge. Lockwood Restaurant & Bar is an onsite restaurant that specializes in American creations. The eatery offer children’s menus and kids usually eat for less than five dollars. Potter’s Lounge showcases light fare and drinks, also providing kids menus. An onsite health club features an indoor pool that families will love. Nearby, families should check out the Navy Pier, Chicago Children’s Museum and Millennium Park.

The hotel has recently launched a children’s program, called the Peacock Club after a child guest of the hotel nicknamed the hotel the Peacock Hotel due to its ornate peacock sculptures and artwork found throughout the hotel. The Peacock Club begins even before kids arrive, assigning a “kid’s program champion” to a family to make sure all of their favorite snacks, books and movies are available when they get to the hotel. VIP’s (Very Important Peacocks) get a special check-in area where kids receive a backpack containing a coloring book with crayons, travel journal, underwater camera and lobby magnet. VIPs also have a robe and slippers waiting in the room, along with a stuffed peacock and a variety of bath accessories, including a rubber duck and water-grow dinosaur, and shampoos and soaps just for kids.

Every Friday evening, “Splash Screenings” of movies at the pool are played for families. A Children’s tea service featuring pastries and sandwiches, as well as a trunk of dress up clothes, are available by appointment. Kids can also borrow a Red Flyer wagon, and enjoy a special children’s menu at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Lockwood.

Not bad, can't recommend

by camoore1985

Hotel is ok for location and a 'roof over your head'... but check in staff were slow, rude and abrupt. Room was again just ok, aside from the peeling wallpaper and the broken faucets. This wouldn't be so bad if these guys didn't have a 4* classification! Staff at the Potters bar were ok but exceptionally slow and forgetful. Room service was excellent though.

A little tired

Listen, is the Palmer House going to win an award any time soon? Probably not. It's a standard 3 star Hilton, relatively clean (the bedside tables were a bit dusty, though that's probably because I was in a room that was infrequently stayed in), small bathroom, paint peeling a little, and not a great view. And the lobby - it's grand and beautiful. The front desk is dutiful, friendly, and gets you on your way. It's a hotel that won't make an impression on you besides that wonderful lobby. You can do better in Chicago, though this hotel with a modicum of work, could be restored to its former fabulous glory.
