When booking a hotel or resort in the Poconos, be sure to do your homework. While there are plenty that cater to families, there are also plenty that still cater to honeymooners and aren't at all kid-friendly.
The weather in the Poconos varies significantly, with the hottest days usually in the high 80's. The warmest month of the year is usually July. Winter gets very cold, and the region gets a significant amount of snow. Be prepared! Be sure you have a vehicle that can handle the weather if you're driving in winter months.
If you are planning to participate in any outdoor family activities like rafting, skiing or horseback-riding, be aware that they book up quickly during peak travel times. Be sure to call ahead, and make reservations. Don't just show up and expect you'll be able to get in.
Getting there and around
Since the Poconos region covers quite a bit of ground, there are several different options for getting there, depending on your final destination. The Poconos are accessible by six major highways: I-80, I-81, I-84, I-78, I-380 and I-476. Most attractions in the Poconos are about an hour and a half from New York City and Philadelphia, three from Atlantic City, three and a half from Baltimore and five from Boston. If you are flying in, it helps to have access to ac car, particularly if you are planning to do any sightseeing. If you are flying in and staying at one of the larger resorts like Skytop, you may decide you don't need one. Airports that service the Poconos include the Lehigh Valley International Airport, Newark Liberty, JFK, Philadelphia International, LaGuardia and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International.
