Like many Caribbean locations, high season runs from mid-December to mid-April, low season from mid-June to mid-November and shoulder season from mid-April to mid-June and mid-November to mid-December.
Getting There
Many airlines fly to Puerto Rico, a major hub for flights to the Caribbean. Among the airlines servicing San Juan International airport are American, Continental, Delta, United, US Airways and JetBlue.
To reach Culebra or Vieques, you can take a small plane or a ferry. Vieques Air Link flies to Vieques from both the San Juan International airport, as well as from San Juan's Isla Grande airport. Vieques Air Link flies to Culebra on demand. Air Flamenco flies from Isla Grande airport to Culebra and also to Vieques on demand.
From Fajardo to Vieques, the ferry ride is approximately 45 minutes, and from Fajardo to Culebra, the ferry ride is about 90 minutes.
Rental cars and taxis are plentiful. Complimentary hop-on, hop-off trolleys also operate in Old San Juan.
Off the Radar
Arecibo Radio Telescope and Observatory
At 1,000 feet in diameter, this telescope rates as the world's largest single-dish radar radio telescope. A cable car takes you to a platform from which you can observe the massive telescope, located in an enormous sinkhole in Puerto Rico. Call ahead for tour hours.
