The Quality Suites in Lake Buena Vista is as close as I can imagine to the ideal family hotel in the Orlando area. Conveniently located midway between Disney and Universal on a shaded and not-so-hectic parkway, QSLBV is an easy drive to either park more +complex. You can even avoid hitting the interstate if you choose, with a little help from googlemaps, and along those routes you may luck into a few of the delicious bargain dining options we enjoyed (check out Sweet Tomatoes for a healthy and epic pay-by-the-ounce salad bar/buffet spread or Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza for the best pie south of Chicago). There's also a Whole Foods en route to Universal (same complex as Anthony's) as well as a Walmart, in case you forget ponchos or run out of sunscreen (we did both!).

As for the hotel, it's an amazing bargain. For less than $100/night with tax, we enjoyed a 2 room suite with 2 queen beds and a sofa-bed in the common room (though I always put the sofabed mattress on the floor for better sleeping---those painful bars!). There was plenty of room for all five of us (2 adults and 3 kids, ages 9, 13 and 14). The kitchenette was ample for quick meals at the hotel, although our park-time-maximization plan gave us very little opportunity to fully avail ourselves of the facilities. Kitchen amenities included a good-sized fridge, stove, dishwasher and microwave... what more could you need to save some bucks on dining out? But what truly saved us serious coin was the generous and varied breakfast items they provided every morning. Fresh fruits, juices, milk, coffee, tea and hot chocolate, a hot dish (usually egg based with a side meat), hard-boiled eggs, make your own waffles, cereals, yogurt, bagels, muffins, breads and all the spreads. The friendly staff just kept it coming, and we found that with such a filling start to our day, we never over-spent on lunches. One caveat: school groups have obviously discovered this deal, and there were hoards of teenagers at certain times each morning pillaging the buffet. But we caught on quickly, and learned when to time our lobby visit to avoid the crowds, without impinging on our park time.

The hotel is kept sufficiently clean, has a good-sized pool (though we spent so much time at the parks, we didn't do much swimming), a gift shop, and all the other expected amenities for the price. The staff was always helpful; when the first room we were given didn't suit my wife (can't remember why now), they moved us immediately without any hassle.

I recommend this place without reservations, but you'd better be sure to make yours early, because I suspect it's hard to find a vacancy if you don't reserve well in advance. If you are ready to give yourself over to the Orlando park experience, but don't want to break the bank with on-property hotels and locked-in meal plans, Quality Suites in Lake Buena Vista deserves a serious look!
