Texas can be unbearably hot in the summer -- climbing into the 100s during our June visit. Despite the heat, the crowds were still in abundance. Visit during the summer and brave the heat for better deals and less crowds, or visit in the winter months, where the crowds are at their lightest. Spring and fall provide better weather but are considered high season.
Getting There & Around
San Antonio International Airport has 100 flights daily from 21 different airlines. City buses, taxis and hotel shuttles may help you get to your hotel, but this big city is stretched out as far as the eye can see -- and beyond -- so renting a car would be wise.
Further Afield
Austin, Texas, the state capital and a main stage for musicians, is about two hours from San Antonio and makes a nice side trip. Although politicians are roaming the downtown streets, the city vibe is far more artistic and bohemian; Austin's slogan is "Keep the Weird in Austin." For the kids, be sure to witness the hundreds of thousands of bats that fly out from beneath the Ann Richards Bridge nightly between March and December. More than million Mexican bats call the bridge home, the largest concentration of Mexican bats in the country. The local hotels and restaurants feature patios in which to enjoy a sunset dinner and await the unusual attraction. It can take 30 minutes for all the bat to fly out, and special bat-themed drinks and dinners are provided. A bat-watching sunset cruise is even available.
