Many families land and immediately depart for the beaches, rainforests and mountains, which are a few hours away. But San Jose is worth a short visit if you have the time. It's also a nice place to base your family if you plan to do day trips to explore other areas of Costa Rica.

Offering a "city" feel, San Jose, Costa Rica is best known for its cultural museums, including the Children's Museum (where you could easily spend an entire day with the kids). Within San Jose, you'll also find many restaurants and shops, all of which are easy to get to on foot (though taxis are readily available).

Families will also find small parks or squares throughout San Jose that provide a pretty place to stop and have lunch or take a break from sightseeing.
