Getting There
San Juan's Luis Munoz Marin International Airport is a hub for flights to and from the Caribbean and Central and South America. Located in Carolina, Condado Beach, where the Marriott awaits, is about 15 minutes by cab.
Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, which means a passport is not required for entry. It's a wonderful way to escape to the Caribbean and enjoy the country's international flair without a passport, but if you'll be continuing on to other Caribbean islands, a passport will be needed.
Getting Around
Cabs are inexpensive, and the city bus is easy to find and use, so forgo the car rental and let someone else do the driving.
The Downsides
There was only one true complaint I had about the San Juan Marriott: the lobby crowds. No matter what time of day it was, there was always a line at the desk for check-in and checkout. When I placed my keys near my phone and demagnetized them, I had to wait in that same line to get new ones to get back in my room -- about 15 minutes. My ride to the airport had to wait 20 while I checked out. (Although I could have elected to do the easy checkout and just dropped my key in the box and avoided the wait.)
During one stint in line, I saw two different groups get upset that their rooms were not yet ready -- apparently a common enough occurrence, as the desk area also has a very large stack of pre-printed cards explaining what to do at the resort if such a case were to exist. However, I also noticed that check-in time wasn't until the afternoon and those upset were checking in during the checkout period.
All About the Extras
A special computer kiosk in the lobby is available for online airline check-in-only. It connects to all airline websites and allows guests to check in and print boarding passes before leaving the resort. A very nice touch, although the lines are very large in the morning so try to remember to check in during the evening hours.
