Savannah & Golden Isles Family Friendly Restaurants
214 Mallery StreetSt. Simon Island, GA 912-634-6500
Located in the village of St. Simons Island, the southern chain restaurant specializing in crab cakes is so family friendly they will make your children practically anything they want if they cannot find anything on the menu or kids' menu they want to eat. Not likely, as the menu is filled with the standard favorites, including salads, burgers, seafood, and more.
40 Estil Hammock RoadTybee Island, GA 912-786-9857
Touted as "Where the elite eat in their bare feet," this kitschy eatery is the type of beachside retreat that offers flair in the form of its 78 resident live alligators. The restaurant serves up Low country-style dishes, including BBQ ribs, chicken and boiled, steamed or raw seafood.
Riverview DriveJekyll Island, GA
Across the lawn from Jekyll Island's Club Hotel is a pier restaurant and bar that affords dinner guests beautiful sunset views over Jekyll Creek. Eat indoors, if you must, but the best seats are the outdoor spots at "Rah" Bar, the restaurant's pet-friendly spot. (You know any place that welcomes pets can handle your kids!) Live music is offered Fridays through Sundays, and the entire family is welcome to wear flip-flops. While the "Rah" Bar is open daily for lunch and dinner, Latitude 31 is only open Tuesdays through Sundays for dinner.
20 East BroadSavannah, GA 912-233-5757
It's rumored that Savannah's River Street was once a romping ground for pirates, including the notorious Bluebird. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, pirates used an old tunnel from this former inn, opened in 1753, to get to the river to shanghai sailors onto awaiting ships where they were forced to live a pirate's life. Now the restaurant plays up its pirate past with even live pirates making their rounds during meals.
225 East River StreetSavannah, GA 912-233-8411
Occupying the space formerly known as Sweet Georgia Brown's, made famous in "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," this candy shop is a must-visit. On one side of the store, barrels filled to the rim with candy and confections tempt eager hands, while on the other, you can watch the candy makers in action, concocting the city's famed -- and ultra sweet -- pecan pralines, as well as taffy, fudge and any other sweet tooth-pleasing candy you can think of.
