Calling all "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" fans: "We're going to The Catskills!"

by Laurie C

As a big fan of the Amazon Prime tv series "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", I was DELIGHTED to find out that the episodes where they filmed in The Catskills was actually at an existing old resort: Scott's Family Resort on the beautiful Oquaga Lake in Deposit, NY.
As soon as you turn into the resort, it's like you've stepped back in time. Who says you can't go back again?!! At Scott's, its like you never left the 1950's! Our hosts for the weekend were The Scott's Family(6th generation). A lovely family that goes out of their way to make you comfortable. For us, it was all about the tv show so we immediately roamed the grounds to see all the sites: the house where The Maisels stayed(and where Joel came up and slept on the couch), the luncheonette counter, the hotel lobby, the bowling alley, the boats, the lake, everything!! It's like walking on a movie set but it's all real and in tact!(actually the resort is 150 years old!). This resort offers guests the opportunity to step back in time and enjoy the simpler things. You can swim in the crystal clear lake, go in a canoe or row boat. Don't miss the 4pm boat ride on a large boat complete with awning(depicted in tv show) where guests go out on the lake and with help of a live keyboard player, are given Song Books from the early 1900's and sing along to such sweet songs from a bygone era("East Side, West Side, all around the town....); dinner was a bbq(steak, delicious vegetable lasagna, potatoes, green beans) served on the lawn and we sat up on the wrap around porch overlooking the lake and dined. So pretty! Afterwards we strolled around the property and then went to Paddy's Pub(an old bar serving beer/wine with authentic artifacts decorating the walls from yesteryear...The Scott Family provided the entertainment with live music and great singing and invited many a guest to come up and sing as well. Afterwards we went up to The Playhouse and enjoyed ping pong, pool, tabletop shuffleboard and bowling!(with original old alleys where you have to set up the pins yourselves!). The sleeping accommodations were fine and the beds were comfy. Sleeping with the windows open to enjoy the Catskill mountain fresh air! Breakfast the next day was similar to a continental breakfast(eggs, French toast, bagels, muffins, cereal, coffee/tea,...) All in all it was a MARVELOUS experience whether you're.a fan of the Emmy award winning tv series or just want a relaxing getaway in the mountains!

Catskills Gem Resort

I honestly dont know how I can write about Scott's Family Resort without feeling emotional about it. We spent the last weekend here as we had to pick up daughter from the Frenchwood's camp in Hancock. We decided our trip last minute and as a result most of the nearby hotels in Catskills were sold out. In retrospect that was a blessing in disguise due to which we got to experience the magic of Scott's Family Resort.

Now before you have your expectations all up, let me tell you this is a 150 years old resort and its totally family run and it's been in the family generations for 4 years. Its old and run down but it has the old world charm to it. Rooms could use some updating but again the old style carpets, furniture and fixtures is the beauty of this place. The family is fighting tooth and nail to keep the place going considering their season is so short and getting temp staff is not always easy in that part of town and not to forget the upkeep of an older place is always a challenge. But the beauty of the resort, the gorgeous lake and the such warm and friendly service from the family will make your heart and soul happy while you are here. It almost felt like we were visiting my grandmas place.

They have bunch of activities right from bowling, ping pong, board games, pool table, kayaking/canoeing, water tubing, tennis. They have home style breakfast everyday for $10 a person which is great way to get your day started. Also weekends they have prefix menu in their bar/restaurant downstairs with live music. They have a showboat tour at 4pm everyday with karaoke of old time songs and its quite a treat.
I know for sure we have found our summer vacation home.

This is not a luxury resort. Yes there is lot of repair, updating, cleaning and maintenance needed. If you are willing to overlook that and go back in time and appreciate everything the Scott's family is doing to keep the resort going, I promise you , your time here will be magical just like ours.
