We only planned to stay in Waikiki for a few nights as we were eager to simply 'see the sights' and head out to a neighbor island to really experience Hawaii. Wow, we were so surprised with all the changes in Waikiki and especially at the
more +Sheraton, that we did not want to leave!
The main street behind the hotel, Kalakaua Ave, is now more pedestrian-friendly with wide meandering walking paths lit by tiki torches, and enhanced with gardens, water features and diverse shopping and dining. Lots of outdoor seating for families and great people watching.
The Sheraton Waikiki was just completing a 5-year renovation, so the guest rooms, hallways and restaurants had all been redone. They were just completing the front desk renovation when we were there in October 2009, but the FREE internet lounge was open in the lobby. Also, they had recently finished the new infinity edge Adult's only pool, which was great to relax, enjoy the view of Diamond Head and listen to my iPod while our daughter napped. We did spend most of our waking time, however, at the family pool - Helumoa Playground - shared with the Royal Hawaiian. Very busy place, but great ocean views and lots of fun splashing around as well as family-friendly cultural activities such as hula lessons. The dining program at the hotel was great too, as they are now using more locally grown and organic produce in their restaurants. Also, we were able to visit the other Starwood hotels in Waikiki (Royal Hawaiian and Moana Surfrider) and bill back the charges to our room at the Sheraton.
The location of the Sheraton is so close to everything (shops, dining, beach at the Royal), that we would not want to have stayed anywhere else. The waves on the beach were nearly non-existent, so it was easy for our daughter to play in the sand and surf without the worry that the waves would harm her. Waikiki Beach is a busy area, but with the new energy and renovations since our last visit - we had a great time and would definitely return again.
