Springfield is the third largest metropolitan area in Missouri and home to three colleges, including the 24,000 students of Missouri State University who contribute a significant amount of energy to the city.

But before that, Route 66 passed its quirky path through the region and as a result, several hotels and restaurants remain from the heyday of the Mother Road. It's not at all uncommon to encounter a number of international travelers who come to this country to experience historic Route 66.

Springfield is also on the path many travelers take to reach the much more bedazzled Branson and Silver Dollar City, just about an hour south on Highway 65. But Springfield has enough to entertain families who are willing to explore -- from food trucks and video arcades to live theatre and outdoor celebrations.
