Constructed by the British, the was considered "The Gibraltar of the West Indies" and saw battle between the British and French in the late 1600s and 1700s until the Treaty of Paris return St. Kitts and Nevis to British govern. Queen Elizabeth II made Brimstone Hill and National Park in 1985, and to this day it remains one of the most visited sites on the islands. Liamuiga (the original name of the island before Christopher Columbus named it for himself upon his discovery) or half-day rainforest hikes through the Valley of the Giants get the family up close and personal with the island's landscape, of which monkeys are a prominent feature. ![]() | Hamilton Estate Nevis Alexander Hamilton was born here, on his family's sugar plantation, which continued to produce sugar into the 1950s. The windmill tower, made of volcanic stone, and 19th Century steam engine remain around the ruins, but it's the panoramic views of Charlestown, Nevis' capital city, and St. Kitts that make the visit a great addition to any itinerary. ![]() | Horatio Nelson Museum Nevis • 869-469-0408 Some would say Lord Nelson left his heart in Nevis, meeting his wife on the island, and marrying her on the island's Montpelier Plantation. A museum exhibiting a large collection of Nelson memorabilia examines "Nevis in the Time of Nelson" with prints, ship models, and decorative art. Montpelier Plantation, now a Relais & Chateaux manor hotel, has a plaque marking the sight where Lord Nelson wed his beloved. Best For: Kids (7-9)•Tweens (10-12)•Teens (13+) |
![]() | Port Zante St. Kitts • 869-466-5021 Located in the historic district of downtown Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts, cruise ships pull right in to this port complete with rainbow-hued buildings featuring shopping and dining. Stores offer clothing, accessories, souvenirs, jewelry, electronics, cigars and more, but restaurants, bars and a casino often are crowded when cruises arrive. Steps outside Port Zante is Basseterre, for more authentic goods without as much color or cleanliness.
