Carl's Drive In 903 Manchester Road•St. Louis, MO •314-961-9652 Get a taste of classic American nostalgia at Carl's Drive In. It's a vintage drive-in style burger joint that serves floats, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and onion rings -- and has root beer on tap! Keep in mind that this place is tiny and can get pretty crowded around lunch and dinner. But of course, you can always get your food to go. |
Imo's Pizza 4479 Forest Park•St. Louis, MO •314-535-4667 Imo's is where you can find St. Louis-style pizza, which is a very thin-crust, almost cracker-like pizza with tangy cheese. St. Louis-style pie is cut into squares instead of wedges. In addition to pizza, the restaurant serves St. Louis-style toasted ravioli (crunchy, baked ravioli filled with meat), plus salads, pasta and sandwiches. If you're staying in downtown St. Louis near the Gateway Arch, Imo's will most likely deliver to your hotel. Prices are affordable. |
Pappy's Smokehouse 3106 Olive Street•St. Louis, MO •314-535-4340 Meat lovers flock to Papy's, a famous St. Louis barbeque joint that dishes out savory one-syllable eats from ribs to slaw. Although barbeque ribs is the star here, don't overlook Pappy's tasty sides -- the sweet potato fries are delicious! There's usually a line, so avoid prime lunch and dinner hours or be prepared to wait. Portions are very large. Napkins are necessary! |
Pi 6144 Barack Obama Boulevard•St. Louis, MO •314-727-6633 One of the city's most famous pizza places, Pi is the joint where President Obama himself stopped during a campaign visit to St. Louis. The pizza here is different from your typical Pizza Hut fare. Pies are extremely deep dish and made with an unusual cornmeal crust and a very chunky tomato sauce. The sauce goes on top of the toppings and cheese! Dozens of interesting toppings listed on the menu, from Amish chicken to fresh rosemary to gorgonzola cheese, are sure to add some pizzazz to your pie. Gluten-free crust is available. |
Sweetie Pies at the Mangrove 4270 Manchester Avenue•St. Louis, MO •314-371-0304 St. Louis "soul food" is served here -- fried chicken, mashed potatoes, cornbread, mac and cheese. There's no kids' menu, but parents may request any dish in a kid's size. Food is served cafeteria-style, which means you line up, get your fixin's from a buffet and then sit down (waiters bring drinks to your table). For dessert, munch on tasty Southern-inspired treats like peach cobbler. |
Ted Drewes Frozen Custard 6726 Chippewa Street•St. Louis, MO •314-481-2652 Ted Drewes is a St. Louis landmark. The first store opened in St. Louis 1929, selling Christmas trees and custard (they still sell the trees!). According to legend, Ted Drewes' milkshakes, known as "Concretes," are so thick you can hold them upside down without anything spilling out. There are two store locations in St. Louis where families can get smooth, rich custards, cones, sundaes, floats and other sweet treats. |
