The Pitons, two volcanic cones rising a half-mile off St. Lucia's southwestern coast, serve as the island's iconic symbols. Formed by volcanic eruptions, St. Lucia has, at its interior, thousands of acres of mountainous rain forest, laced by 29 miles of trails, a fact that earns the island its nickname of "the Emerald Isle." St. Lucia's mix of beaches, verdant valleys, banana plantations and dense forests lure sun-lovers and water sports enthusiasts, as well as eco-adventurers. On St. Lucia, you can see the steaming sulphur pools of a real volcano, hike the island's lush forests, stroll through fragrant gardens, watch for leatherback turtles and zoom through the treetops on a zip line.
Because of the island's topography, most roads wind around hills and mountains, making driving slower than usual. Plan your outings so that you visit attractions near each other, and avoid day-long road trips. By doing so, you limit your time on the twisting roads, minimizing the chances of car sickness and maximizing your time at attractions and on the beach.
