What started as a quarrying industry in the 1860's has now evolved into the State of Georgia's most popular attraction: Stone Mountain Park. Of course, as the world's largest piece of exposed granite, it's not surprising that locals and visitors alike are drawn to Stone Mountain. In fact, the first tourist attraction at Stone Mountain was a 165-foot-tall wooden tower constructed in 1838 on top of the mountain by Aaron Cloud. He charged 50 cents to climb the tower. Today, that tower is long gone, but visitors can still visit the mountaintop, either by cable car or hiking to the top.

Stone Mountain Park offers much more than just a view from the mountaintop though. Families can picnic throughout the park, explore 15 miles of hiking and walking trails around the mountain, ride bikes, go fishing, or just relax on the Great Lawn and take in the Memorial Carving on the mountainside. For more action, visitors also can take part in some of the onsite attractions, such as visiting an 1800's antebellum plantation, riding on the scenic railroad, playing mini-golf or teeing off on a full course, and tackling a ropes course. At Stone Mountain Park, guests are welcome to do as much, or as little, as they wish.

Open year-round, Stone Mountain Park also welcomes families to come and enjoy a number of annual and special events throughout the year. These include arts and crafts festivals, cultural days, holiday celebrations, and, of course, the park's famous Lasershow Spectacular, a laser light show that airs nightly throughout the summer.

To make the most of your visit to Stone Mountain Park, you'll also find a wide selection of dining spots, souvenir shops and even onsite accommodations within the park. Whether you come for a day or an extended stay, Stone Mountain Park offers more than enough to keep every family entertained. Many people also choose to visit Atlanta while they're in the area -- it's just 30 minutes from Stone Mountain Park.
