Shockingly noisy

by awordtothewise

For a massively expensive hotel, the noise levels in some rooms... ok in my room... are really shocking. Writing this long after midnight with a party on the pool terrace 10 stories below. Impossible to sleep. the windows in this corner suite have zero audio protection. If you ever have to come here, try to do so when no one else is.

Great location, swanky, but not as luxurious as you'd expect!

We stayed using American Express' Fine Hotels & Resorts promotion. My wife and I don't usually treat ourselves to the fanciest of hotels, so we wanted to try it out! After staying for four nights, this is what I observed:
+ GREAT location. You're probably as close to most of what you would want to do in LA while staying here.
+ The hotel has a lot of history, it's pretty fancy & "old Hollywood" swanky (if you're into that sort of thing), and it's very private.
+ You are likely to run into celebrities from time to time there, as it's a popular hangout spot for many A-listers due to the hotel's exclusivity and privacy.

- Parking. First of all, it's $50/night, and they don't tell you until you're checking out. I had to initial a bunch of waivers and NOTHING said anything about parking cost. That seemed a little dishonest.
- The rooms are extremely small and we can hear the conversations being had in the rooms next to us, and they weren't even talking that loudly. Interestingly, we had a "free upgrade". I would hate to see the size of the non-upgraded rooms. Think of the cheapest room you'd get in a cruise ship, but with a view. That's the size of the room you're likely getting.
- Restaurant is extremely expensive. I used to live in LA and I've had expensive. But this is simply insane. The food is good but not great, and not worth the price. If you want a really good upscale dining experience, I'd recommend The Beverly Hills Hotel. Great food for a similar, or possibly slightly lower price, and you still get a similar feel.
- Back to parking: it's a pain. At times expect to wait about 15-20 minutes for your car. You have no choice but to valet, so you're pretty much stuck waiting unless you call from the room a few minutes before leaving.
- You can get better complimentary continental breakfast at Holiday Inn. Not kidding.

Lastly, if you book with AMEX Fine Hotels, make sure you're explained how to apply your $100 credit towards dining/spa at check-in. They didn't with me, and I had to form a whole hoopla with AMEX to get that credit back.
