Nicknamed "Garden of the Great Spirit" by the ancient Iroquois and spanning 50 miles from Kingston to Brockville, along the St. Lawrence River where it meets Lake Ontario, Thousand Islands, Canada has more than ever to offer for families.

Cross the Canadian border from the U.S. and you'll discover that while just as scenic as Thousand Islands, New York, a few things are different in the Thousand Islands region of the "Great White North." In Canada, distance is measured in kilometers versus miles, the American dollar tends to be worth a bit more than its Canadian counterpart, and even in southern Ontario (where you can order poutine at McDonald's!), there is a steady infusion of French-Canadian culture.

Did you know that there are actually 1,864 islands in the Thousand Islands region of the U.S. and Canada, two-thirds of which are located in Canada? In order to be considered an island, a Thousand Island landform must be surrounded by water 365 days a year and it must be able to support a living tree. From tiny "Just Enough" island--the smallest inhabited island--to the largest, Wolfe Island--which you can reach by a free ferry--that's a lot of islands to see!

Speaking of which, one of the highlights of a Thousand Islands, Canada family vacation is taking in the spectacular views! When the weather doesn't cooperate, families will find plenty of entertainment options in the area. Recent additions include a brand new aquarium/discovery center, an accessible eco adventure park and several new lodgings with kid-friendly amenities.
