Overview

If it weren’t for a bright, blue canopy outside the building, you’d pass Topaz – A Kimpton Hotel. The property is located on a quiet, residential street in Washington D.C. — its best asset, in our opinion. It’s truly removed from the city’s hustle and bustle, yet close enough that you don’t have to go far to get to Dupont Circle and other area attractions. Perhaps this is why President Theodore Roosevelt chose to live where the hotel now stands – another fun asset of the hotel.

In addition to a prime location, the hotel offers traditional amenities found at Kimpton Hotels – a children’s program, wine receptions and pet-friendly policy — along with some fun extras, like a make-your-own trail mix bar and complimentary tablets to use at the hotel.

Room Information

Find the Best Price for Your Stay

The hotel provides just 99 guestrooms, each decorated in hues of royal blue and pale yellow, with abstract paintings on walls -- a signature feature at many Kimpton Hotels. Many rooms have tub/shower combinations for families.

Amenities include iPod docking stations, triple-sheeted down comforters, honor bars, yoga mats and animal print robes (kids' sizes available).

Cribs are available at no extra charge, while rollaway beds are available for $25 per night. Connecting rooms are also available.

Queen Queen Deluxe
As the name implies, this room type offers two queen beds, perfect for a family of four. It offers views of N Street, a quiet, residential street, and Dupont Circle. It's 375 square feet in size.

Energy Rooms
This room type seems to be designed for the fitness-minded traveler, but is actually perfect for a family of three. It's 400 square feet, with a king bed and stationary bike, plus a separate alcove with a daybed. The daybed can be privatized with a curtain, making kids feel as if they have their own room.

Deluxe Yoga Rooms
Similar to Energy Rooms, these units offer yoga equipment.

Serenity Suite
This room sleeps up to four in one king bed and one sofa bed.

Of course, the hotel also has a Queen Deluxe Room with one queen bed, and a King Deluxe Room with one king bed, both best for two adults.

Reviews

Not up to Kimpton Standards

by Sherpa755157

This hotel has certainly seen better days. The front desk staff is flat and offers not a hint of welcome. Though our beds were pretty comfortable, the bathroom shows serious signs of age, with cabinet doors hanging askew, bubbling paint on the ceiling, and a backed-up shower drain that filled up to my ankles. The dining area at breakfast was littered with used dishes and plates, hardly an appetizing setting to enjoy the complimentary breakfast. The location is great, but this location falls flat when it comes to other Kimpton hotels.

Lovely and yummy

by MaryAWhite

Tucked into a quiet street and surrounded by restaurants, the Topaz is an excellent choice in the DuPont Circle neighborhood. My room was large, perfectly clean, well furnished and beautifully lighted. The included breakfast featured delicious coffee, juices and croissants as well as fruit and cereals. A variety of newspapers are free. In the evening there are two complimentary wine receptions! It’s a pleasant 20 minute walk to the White House and National Mall museums. Staff were all attentive and pleasant.

Family Activities

Bicycles
Topaz provides four complimentary bicycles, including one that's child-sized. The bikes are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and helmets are available.

Kindle Fires
The hotel provides three Kindle Fires on a first-come, first-served basis, with no restrictions for rent time. All devices are fully loaded with games, books, magazines and apps.

Kimpton Kids
Available at all Kimpton Hotels, Kimpton Kids provides youngsters with pet goldfish in rooms (upon request), welcome treats, hula hoops and other surprises. The program also allows parents to rent strollers -- one less thing to pack.

Family Dining

Topaz Bar
Topaz Bar mostly offers soups, salads, full entrees and small plates -- the latter perfect for kids (there isn't a specific kids' menu). Options include mac and cheese, wings, burgers and fries. A continental breakfast is also available each morning. Topaz Bar is open 7 to 10:30 a.m., and then 5 to 10:30 p.m. daily.

Room Service
In-room dining is available via Topaz Bar, and hours are the same -- 7 to 10:30 a.m. and 5 to 11 p.m. daily.

Make-Your-Own Trail Mix Bar
Guests can create a healthy snack (on the house) to start their day, 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Options include granola, nuts, raisins and chocolate.

Wine Hours
Don't be fooled by the name -- the hotel's wine receptions (and really, all wine receptions at Kimpton Hotels) are family-friendly, with cookies and fruit punch for kids, or even hot apple cider during colder months. They're held from 5 to 6 p.m. daily.

Planning & Tips

All About the Extras
Wi-Fi
Sign up for Kimpton Karma Rewards, a free program that allows guests to enjoy free Wi-Fi, exclusive restaurant offers, a $10 in-room mini-bar credit and personalized perks, such as your favorite type of pillows. It also allows you to earn free nights at Kimpton Hotels. For non-members, Wi-Fi is available for $12.99 per night.

Hotel Fee
If you don't sign up for Kimpton Karma Rewards, you'll be asked to pay a daily hotel fee of $15 (again, sign up for Kimpton Karma). This includes upgraded Wi-Fi, coffee and tea each morning, local and long distance calls, and car service within one mile of the hotel (other restrictions apply).

Forgot It? We've Got It!
Did you forget your toothbrush? Topaz has it. Can't sleep without white noise? Topaz has that covered, too. Ask staff at the front desk for any necessities you may have forgotten to pack - they'll likely have them right at the hotel.

Pet Policy
Animals are welcome free of charge at Topaz and other Kimpton Hotels. Dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, hermit crabs -- you name it, they're welcome. Bowls, beds, treats and other creature comforts are provided, too.

Fitness Center
The hotel doesn't have a fitness center, but provides passes to a local YMCA.

Check-In/Check-Out
Check-in is at 3 p.m. and check-out is at noon.

The Art of Smart Timing
The best time to visit Washington, D.C., of course, is during the National Cherry Blossom Festival and the summer months that follow. Hotel rates are, of course, higher during those times. Enjoy lower rates with a visit in the fall or during the months of January and February.

Getting There
Topaz is located just 4 miles from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, though you'll still sit in traffic to get to and from the hotel. Washington Dulles International Airport, served by more flights, is 30 miles away -- count on more than an hour's drive. Utilize public transportation to get to and from the hotel -- you won't want to drive around the city during your stay.

Getting Around
Valet parking is available for $49, plus tax, per night. The closest metro station is Dupont Circle Station, a little more than a half-mile away.

For Mom and Dad
Catch a free comedy show on Thursdays, right at the hotel. Called Laughing Buddha-ha, the event delivers 10 local comedians who tell jokes for 10 minutes each. After you've gained some liquid courage, hop up on stage yourself during "Everyone's A Comedian" -- you could win $25 in cash (and beer). Another option is in-room massage services.
