A Mecca for amusement park-loving families, Orlando is one of those destinations that families return to time and time again, year after year. If you're looking for a great alternative to Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort should be at the top of your list. Kids, especially those for whom Mickey and his gang have lost some their novelty and appeal, will love experiencing other familiar characters like Shrek, Harry Potter, Spiderman and The Simpsons. If you're planning an extended vacation to Orlando, Universal works well as part of your itinerary; but it's absolutely worthy of a visit on its own. It really is its own destination, with three on-site hotels, dozens of restaurants, and two separate theme parks, all within walking distance of one another.
The Universal Orlando Resort includes Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, the two theme parks, as well as the Wet 'n Wild waterpark, and Citywalk, an entertainment complex with restaurants, bars, and shows. Universal Studios is the older of the two theme parks, and some of the rides are showing signs of age. But here you'll find classic favorites like the E.T. Adventure and JAWS, and the awesomely creepy Revenge of the Mummy coaster. Islands of Adventure is home to the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction, as well as the long-time favorite, Spiderman, and Seuss Landing. If you only have time or budget for one of them, make it Islands of Adventure.
