Overview

San Diego has plenty of family-friendly hotels, but few are as grand and historic as the US Grant, located within steps of the Gaslamp District. Serving travelers to the city since 1910, the US Grant was opened at a then-excessive budget of $1.9 million and named to honor President Ulysses S. Grant. In that day, the hotel’s grand entrance was located directly across the bay to Coronado. Today, the hotel has 270 guestrooms and suites, and is adorned with silk carpets, crystal chandeliers and an Art Deco style. Perfect for all families? Perhaps not. Perfect for families who want to feel pampered? Definitely!

First stay

This was our first stay at the US Grant. The property, service and history are all worthy of a return visit. If you take a stroll to the second floor above the lobby, you will see the portraits of the former US President guests.

Just Perfect!

by ArizonaArchitect

I attended a conference at the US Grant recently. I was initially aprehensive about the location because I had stayed in this hotel some years ago and bk then it was a dowdy hotel living on its faded glory.

This trip I found a cool, classy refurbished hotel that dazzled in every way. Check in was smooth. I was given an upgrade to a signature suite and found myself in a spacious, gorgeous, well though out room.

Staff throughout the property were gracious and thoughtful.

The multi-head shower was as big as my first apartment....

Everything was clean and crisp. Frete linens on the bed. Fine toiletries. upon returning each day there was ice in the bucket, a turned down bed and music playing.

The restaurant offered a wonderful breakfast too!

Also getting here from the airport is a pice of cake. Just buy a transit pass in the terminal at a machine (all day $8) walk a few steps to the curb and get on Bus 992. Drops you right in front of the hotel.

The GasLamp is right outside your door.

Enjoy the perfectly refurbished US Grant!

Family Activities

As a downtown hotel, the US Grant does not offer activities or amenities to entertain the kids. Instead, it provides a convenient location in the Gaslamp District, and luxurious accommodations to enjoy when days filled with family fun come to an end.

Family Dining

The hotel's Grant Grill, which made its debut in 1951, is an Art Deco restaurant serving up fresh Californian cuisine for lunch and dinner. It also provides 24-hour room service dining, including late night options for guests.

The hotel can also create on-the-go picnic baskets with sandwiches, wraps or salads.

Planning & Tips

The Art of Smart Timing
San Diego is renowned for its sunny and temperate year-round weather, and there is never a bad time to visit the city. The best deals for families will be found in fall and early spring.

Getting There
The hotel is located in the Gaslamp District of San Diego, which is just minutes from the San Diego International Airport, via a short taxi ride. There is plenty to see and do within walking distance for those who want to visit without renting a car, but if bringing a car, valet parking is available at a fee.

For Mom and Dad
The hotel has a collection of museum-quality art in the Celebration Fine Art Gallery. The gallery exhibits paintings, ceramics, sculpture, glass and more for view and purchase. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday.

The GG Lounge is the hotel's speakeasy lounge, with live entertainment, light bites and an extensive drink list. It's also a great place to sneak away without the kids!
