Guests can choose to have their breakfast at the glassed-in Conservatory or outside on the Garden Terrace. The hotel offers an extensive menu of omelets, eggs Benedict, pancakes, fresh fruit, oatmeal and other breakfast fare. Off-property, Jonathan's Cafe, on Washington Square within easy walking distance of the hotel, and Gary's Handy Lunch on Lower Thames, are both affordable choices offering the usual assortment of eggs, pancakes, French toast and oatmeal.
Dinner at Vanderbilt Hall's gastropub, Monty's, is a must. As soon as you enter the gilded-age room and listen to the sounds of the piano player belting out Gershwin and Cole Porter tunes, you know you're in for a highly original treat. Walls are decorated with glamour girls from owner Peter de Savary's large collection of illustrations -- which adds to the Gatsby-esque ambiance. We started with the spinach salad topped with feta, pine nuts and fresh blueberries and strawberries (in season). The kids dove into the warm bread, served with a rich French-style butter. For entrees, we wisely chose the seafood pie, dense with meaty lobster, shrimp, scallops, mussels and fish in a light herb cream broth. The children liked the crispy herb chicken, its meat tender on the inside. Save room for the banofee pie, a concoction of bananas and whipped cream that my daughter refused to share. There's also the more traditional toffee pudding, a thick-like-bread pudding doused in a sweet and sticky butterscotch sauce.
After dinner, our family retired to the lounge chairs on the roof deck to see Trinity Church's steeple glowing in the moonlight and view the boats bobbing in the harbor and the expanse of Pell Bridge lit up at night. We wisely grabbed Scrabble from the lobby and brought it upstairs.
