Nice lobby action...the rest is meh

by rastaman85

Room 609 is a small "suite"; definitely bigger than some other spaces I've stayed in NYC, but no one would call it expansive. Bathroom was quite small--note even enough room to put a medium-sized toiletry kit anywhere but the toilet itself. Light in the closet didn't work.

But the lobby bar was terrific! Fun people watching, a mix of tourists and locals, and a couple of great bartenders: Brian and a tall woman with shorter, curly hair and a wonderful demeanor. Good local beers on tap (shout out Brooklyn Brewing), and they even had Suntory Toki...Japanese whiskies can be a bit hard to find. Both of them were very friendly toward this out-of-towner. Surprisingly good food, too.

Good service all around, and they were quick to deliver a requested fridge. beware: don't even look at (much less touch) anything in the minibar. Sheesh, is it pricey!

All in all, I'd come back, but would hope for a larger room, somehow.

Not what it used to be...

We've stayed at this property over the past 14 years and back when it was the 'W New York' it was pretty good. I have to say that since SPG became part of Marriott and this property was re-branded to 'The Maxwell' it has gone downhill. I can't say whether we'll return because it seemed like, during our most recent stay, our loyalty to SPG/Marriott was ignored. We were put in a room that was the size of a closet - we haven't stayed in a room this size at this hotel since our very first stay here in 2005. In addition to the small size, the room was in need of repairs and updating. The shower drain backed up, the sink drain backed up and the HVAC system was so loud it would wake you up in the middle of the night. The electrical outlets didn't seem secure. There was no conditioner in the room. When I went to use the phone to call the front desk to ask for some to be brought to our room, it didn't work. I would recommend that you say 'No thanks' if you are offered room 1019 because it needs help. Overall, I feel like our status/loyalty to this brand is just not worth what it used to bed. Our stay here was disappointing to say the least. The service at the front desk was average - nothing special.
