So disappointed
by Carrolljenn
I had looked forward to this trip for months and just feel overwhelming disappointment. Our cabin is standard Westgate owners accommodations. No complaints except that the key didn't work and we had to get the lodge to send a repair guy ... more and the fireplace doesn't work. My main complaint is the lack of activities that are held during the week. Apparently the hayride dinner only happens on Friday nights although it never said that on the Internet and the front desk customer service didn't tell me when I called weeks in advance to schedule it. Also the saloon is not open Sunday to Wednesday even though this is Thanksgiving week. Horse back riding lists that it open until 4 pm but when we went to buy tickets we were told the last ride was 1 pm. Called to set up shooting and archery and was told I had to go to a third location to pay for the time slots that they said were all booked and they would squeeze us in but when we arrived there was no one there shooting. Overall every time I try to book an activity I am told they are full or that they don't open during the week because most people only come for the weekends. What that makes no sense! If you are so full you are booked open more time slots or stay open the hours you advertise. If people have to book the timeshare for a week visit have something for them to do during the week. I am highly angered that I pay huge payments for a time share and when I trade to a different Westgate location the amenities are not what is advertised or even comparative to what I pay for at my home resort in Gatlinburg.

Marginally Nicer Than a Dump
by wichypoo1231
We were attending a wedding weekend being held at the River Ranch. When we called to make the room reservation, about 6 weeks prior to the event, we were told the time to book for the discounted wedding rate was expired and if we wished to come, it would ... more be $600 per night!! For a room with 2 full-sized beds, not even queen sized beds, because apparently those rooms were all gone. WHAT???? After MANY phone calls to various Westgate personnel, wedding planners, and River Ranch's event planning staff, that was finally straightened out & we got the room at the correct rate. All I kept thinking once we got there was, "They wanted $600 a night for THIS? They must be joking."

The room was clean, I will give it that, however, you could tell it had been recently upgraded because there were still holes in the wall where towels racks and curtain rods had been changed out. It was also extremely dark. In an attempt to get more light into the room, we actually took off all of the dark western motif lamp shades and used bare light bulbs. As a family traveling with two teenagers of the opposite sex, we requested a cot. Nope. No can do, they don't have cots, so we had to bring our own air mattress (Please keep $600 PER NIGHT in mind.) Once we checked in, the young lady at the counter couldn't even show us on a map where our room was, she had to ask someone else. We were given an activity sheet and when we asked about making reservations for those activities, we were told we didn't need them on the weekends, just go on over to what you want to do. So, on Saturday morning, we went to go Skeet shooting. Once we arrived, we were told there were no available times without a reservation and they were booked solid from people that had reserved space 1-2 days prior. So, we tried archery. Same story. Along with swamp buggy rides and airboat rides. We had to settle for the petting zoo and putt-putt golf. ($600 PER NIGHT, remember that?)

On the second day there, after spending the morning attempting to find activities, we came back to our room in the afternoon to get ready for the family member's wedding, and we discovered that the maid had been there. The service consisted of making the beds, laying new towels on the bathroom counter and TURNING OFF OUR AIR CONDITIONER. WHAT???? 85 degrees in central Florida and she turned off the A/C? Why would anyone do that? There was a small sink in our room, and that was left as we left it, with coffee cups in it, so apparently for $600 PER NIGHT, you also wash your own dishes. She did not leave new hotel sized shampoo or conditioner either, and no new soap. If you want additional hygiene items beyond what they give you on the first day, you have to go to the General Store and buy them...($600 per night.)
Once you get to the store, they only sell Pepsi products, so for those of us that think Pepsi tastes like a Coke that has been opened and left out to go flat, well, you're out of luck. And don't even get me started on the prices. Outrageous.

You're miles from nowhere in this place and they know it, so they've got you over a barrel if you need anything.
I wouldn't go back to that place if someone paid ME $600 a night to do it.

I will never, never go back
by jbartlett
We arrived approx. 2:45 pm and they said our room was not ready so we signed away all our rights to anything and everything (the paperwork was unbelievable)and we came back at 4 o'clock. According to the reservation check-in was at 4pm. Well, at 4 pm ... more they told us that our room was still not available and that check-in STARTS at 4 pm. According to their policy check out is at 10 am. I was to say the least angry and they said they would send someone to check to see about the room. Approximately 30 minutes later they finally checked on the room. Well, I should not have been so anxious to get the room because it was filthy.

I made the reservation for 4 adults. Yes, they have an efficiency kitchen but ants had a ball with any and all food. The beds were horrible and the pillows must have been 10 years old. The bathroom looked like it had not been cleaned in the past year. The floors in the bathroom and the whole place were filthy. The bottom of the toilet was never cleaned. The back porch was

We bought tickets for the barbecue/hayride. They were $20 EACH. It rained so the hayride was cancelled but they said that was complimentary and that we actually paid for the barbecue. Well, they had to know how many tickets they sold for the event but when went to the covered area for the barbecue they did not have enough tables. Now, the food was something else. NOTHING was barbecued. They had boiled chicken, hot dogs in hot water. The co slaw was almost all gone, the potatoes were empty and the drinks were empty and nothing was being refilled. We waited 15 minutes standing and holding our food until someone finished and got up from the table. THIS IS WHAT WE PAID $20 A PERSON FOR??? They should be ashamed!!

We did horseback riding and that was fine. $40 for a one hour ride. We also attended the Rodeo that evening and that was also fun. The Saloon was fun both Friday and Saturday nights.

I left feeling like I may have contracted some disease or bugs because of the dirty accommodations. They have not updated ANYTHING in the rooms for at least the last 25 years. For what they charged for the accommodations they should be ASHAMED of themselves! I always connected Westgate with good things but not anymore.

Grumpy Staff, Overpriced, Dirty
by Tanya G
Spent the weekend at the WestGate River Ranch. Within minutes of being at the ranch, we were YELLED at by a gun toting Sheriff employed by the ranch as my son was sitting in the back of the rented golf cart without holding on.

Next we went for ... more archery. They have one staff member for hundreds of guests. The sign said, be back at 9. It was 1 in the afternoon! He was on duty but not only is he in charge of archery, but he is in charge of skeet as well. When he is on the range, you have to wait 45 minutes to pay to rent bows and arrows from a grumpy man that scared my children. He was and is completely overwhelmed. They need a full time attendant while he is on the range.

The food is inedible. Fatty meats, poor quality, and again, the waitresses were completely overwhelmed and impolite.

The rodeo was absolutely the worst I have ever seen. 8 bull rides and a guy showing off his whip skills. What a yawner.

We upgraded to a courtyard room for an extra $70 or so. Oh my! The room is literally 40+ years old and dirty. The tiles are cracked, cabinetry falling apart, and BLOOD ON THE SHEETS!!!

Summary:

A total waste of money, totally overpriced, disgusting food, rude staff for absolutely no reason, and uninhabitable rooms. They completely misrepresent their rooms on their website. The place looks very nice online and those are NOT their rooms. This is a cheap old and dirty motel. We would have been more comfortable and cleaner sleeping in our SUV which we almost did on the second night.

I highly reccommend nobody stay here.

West Gate River Ranch, FL: A Great Way to Promote Family Interaction
by Kaylo
As a single mother of 2 boys ages 18 and 14, I still believe in family values and interaction. I found a great vacation spot dead center in the middle of Florida called Westgate River Ranch. My boys and I have had 2 great weekend getaways at the resort. ... more
The dude ranch offers a variety of family activities such as a guided hay ride tour which exposes the hidden secrets of the uninhabited Florida land, which finishes with a great barbecue concluding with an open fire, marshmallow roast and smores desert.
The air boat ride is a blast. We hurricaned thru herds of wild cattle and spotted alligator.
The swamp buggy ride is also a great excitement.
On our leisure we visited the petting zoo where we watched the sheep being sheered and were able to take home the lambs wool.
Did I mention, the transportation offered is your own personal golf cart. You can get from point a to point b without a problem.
Also offered on your free time is swimming, and miniature golf. For a small fee you can skeet shoot and play archery. Not to mention line dancing lessons given free of charge at a certain time in the Saloon, so that after the Rodeo you can experience a real hoe down.
But my favorite activity at the ranch is horseback riding through the brush.
A nine hole golf course is also an option for fun. And if you have your own personal aircraft, you are able to access the property by their own airport.
You might have a group who likes to party on their own, not a problem. There are campsites available for every happy camper.
Hopefully you'll consider Westgate River Ranch for you next family vacation. Saddle up and have fun filled adventure.
