Buffalo Phil's Grille is another massive eatery with a southwestern theme. Expect a menu of crowd-pleasing favorites like nachos, barbecue and rotisserie chicken in portions big enough to share with at least one other hungry member of your family. The restaurant is attached to Knucklehead's Bowling & Indoor Amusement Park, meaning the whole clan can stay inside and stay well-fed and entertained for hours.

Because the Dells is first and foremost a family destination, nearly every dining establishment welcomes and accommodates all ages. Don't leave the area without having at least one meal at an authentic supper club, a throwback to classic Midwest dining where steak dinners and fish frys are always available and cocktail culture is an important part of the ambience.

Del-Bar is one of the best-known supper clubs in the Dells. Originally built as a roadside steakhouse in 1943, the restaurant still maintains a causal, friendly feel and was designed in the Prairie style by a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright, who had a summer home nearby. Classic dishes like pan-fried wall-eye and New York strip steaks make up the majority of the menu, but newer favorites like sashimi and pot stickers also make an appearance. There's a menu of kids' standards like spaghetti and chicken tenders; but little ones can get more adventurous ordering from the appetizer menu.

Ishnala Supper Club is nestled in the woods overlooking Mirror Lake on land that was once used by the local Winnebago Indian tribe as a ceremonial ground, and still contains a fireplace from a log cabin erected on the site in the 1800's. The specialty of the house here is prime rib, but the jumbo prawns draw plenty of praise, too. A tiki bar is open afternoons from July 4th through mid-August.

If you spot a delivery car driving around the Dells with a massive moose relaxing on top, follow it home to Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co., a massive, lodge-like eatery known for its pan-crust pizzas and micro-brewed beers and sodas. Kids get their own moose ears and can play games in the downstairs arcade while they wait for their food. Pasta, ribs and burgers round out the hearty menu, which also includes massive desserts like "Mile-high Cheescake in the Sky," and a secret-recipe bread pudding.

The Cheese Factory Restaurant is a local favorite that distinguishes itself from the masses by offering crowd-pleasing vegetarian and vegan fare in the heart of meat-and-cheese-lovers' country. Breakfast is served daily until 2 p.m. and includes a wide range of gluten-free choices as well as hearty skillet dishes. Mexican dishes mingle on the menu with Thai, Mediterranean and other global cuisines, and kids love the retro treats, like malts and root beer floats from the old-fashioned soda fountain.

The private, themed dining rooms at House of Embers pay homage to classic movie stars like Omar Sharif and Rudolf Valentino. They're a quirky, fun way to spend a romantic evening out if you get a night out sans kids; but it's worth a visit to this kitschy-cool supper club with the little ones in tow, too. The larger dining spaces cater to families and larger groups, who enjoy the "eat dessert first" philosophy of a staff that brings a basket of warm cinnamon rolls to the table to start the meal. The children of the original owners, both graduates of the Culinary Institute of America, are in charge of the kitchen and turn out mouth-watering renditions of dry-rubbed ribs, Angus steaks and Austrian veal. Kids can choose from mini portions of grown-up fare like lobster and barbecued chicken.
