Overview

This beautiful lodge sits in the shadow of three active volcanoes within the boundaries of Lake Clark National Park. Its isolated location is perfect for a family wanting the excitement of a wilderness experience without sacrificing the comforts of home. The all-inclusive lodge has eight unique rooms available. A family of four will want to book the side-by-side Mountain View and Seaside Suites, which share a bathroom. Gourmet meals are served family-style in the lodge dining room. There’s also a reading room filled with Alaska-themed books, games and puzzles. Satellite TV and free Wi-Fi round out the amenities.

The lodge is only accessible by float plane, usually from Anchorage. As soon as you land on the beach, you’ll see bears. Lots of them. The brown bears here are accustomed to humans, so they go about their normal routine of grazing on the tidal flats or catching fish in the nearby stream. The lodge offers bear viewing trips with a trained guide that take you further into the national park. Fishing on nearby Silver Salmon Creek is also a fun activity, and the lodge provides all the equipment you’ll need. Kids will love clam digging on the beach, canoeing on Silver Salmon Lake, and hiking along the beach to see a glacier. Most of all, everyone will remember sitting on the big outdoor deck back at the lodge and watching the bears in their natural habitat. It’s one of many reasons why the Alaska Homestead Lodge is perfect for your family vacation.

5 Days of Awe and Wonder - Coastal Brown Bears and More

by Sharon D

We visited the Alaska Homestead Lodge for our second time - both five night stays - and this trip was even better than the first. The Lodge itself is comfortable, spotlessly clean, and the staff are beyond helpful. Food is plentiful and delicious, especially if you like fresh salmon, and desserts, and fresh salad, and homemade breads - you get the picture. Bear viewing is an amazing experience, and there are many opportunities for photographing the bears. Our guide, Belle, was professional and helpful. We always felt safe.

We saw a Mama Bear with 3 cubs, and also a sow with 2 cubs. We saw juvenile bears sparring and seemingly having a grand time. We saw bears, bears, and more bears catching salmon, scavenging at the ocean’s edge, napping, and just relaxing at the beach and beside the creek. We also saw a fox and bald eagles, and enjoyed opportunities for landscape photography. Guides keep guests under tight control, and they know the bears’ behavior, so can predict where to find the bears, and still respect their space.

My husband had a medical emergency during our 5 night stay, and he received excellent emergency care. We cannot say enough positive about the owners of the Lodge, James and Shiela. We are also grateful to the Owner and Staff at the adjacent Silver Salmon Creek Lodge. The two Lodges have a great cooperative working relationship which benefits all guests.

We would like to visit the Alaska Homestead Lodge again, and it will be the focal point of any future trips to Alaska.

Flawless

James and Shelia Isaak, the owners of Alaska Homestead Lodge produce a flawless guest experience. We can't imagine more cordial, professional hosts. And the entire staff must have been picked for sharing these qualities.
Our guest room was meticulously clean and well equipped. Every single meal served during our stay was superb. Freshest possible salad ingredients harvested from the on site garden. Entrees for the nights of our stay included fresh salmon, delicious lasagne, and smoked pork loin. Deserts were fresh baked and awesome. Breakfasts and lunches were excellent.
The reason for our visit of course, was to view coastal brown bears. The guides at the lodge knew just where to find them and we had many great experiences viewing and photographing the bears. One morning, a bear wandered through the garden, ate a few raspberries and then peacefully moved on.
The lodge is in a beautiful, very scenic setting and is extremely well maintained. Many upgrades and additions over the years make it attractive and comfortable.
We highly recommend Alaska Homestead Lodge.
