Did you know Annapolis, Maryland is The Sailing Capital of the U.S.? The charming town, located on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is a major port of call for all manner of watercraft, from mega yachts to small fishing boats -- and everything in between. Families can enjoy time on the water with sunset cruises, pirate adventures and more. The area also hosts several boating events each year, including the U.S. Sailboat Show and U.S. Powerboat Show.

Annapolis, Maryland is also home to the U.S. Naval Academy. Have a prospective student in the family? Take him or her to stroll the grounds, see officers in training, visit the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, and more. Even if you don't have prospective students or family in the military, it's an interesting, educational place to take the kids for an afternoon.

Other highlights in Annapolis include the Maryland State House, where George Washington resigned from the Continental Army and ended the Revolutionary War; outdoor excursions at Quiet Waters Park or along the B&A (Baltimore and Annapolis) Trail that connects Annapolis to Glen Burnie, Maryland; and Historic Annapolis itself, where cobblestone streets lead to delicious restaurants and boutique stores. Be sure to stop at the Annapolis Ice Cream Company, then make your way to the end of Main Street for sunset views on the harbor.

Annapolis, Maryland is located less than an hour from Baltimore and Washington, D.C. and just over two hours from Philadelphia, making it a great destination for a weekend getaway with kids. If you have more time, add on a visit to the Eastern Shore across the bay, where more charming towns await your family.
