1869 Schoolhouse Museum

Nauset and Schoolhouse Roads, Eastham, MA

Class is always in session at the 1869 Schoolhouse Museum. And while your kids would normally do anything to stay as far away from a school as possible while on vacation, this museum is interesting and entertaining. Children are blown away when they discover that this cramped, one-room building, built in 1869, was once a school. As they sit in the old wooden desks (pleasantly refurbished), peer through the tattered pages of some of the books and write on the period-correct mini-chalk boards of the day, they’ll become very grateful for their comfortable chairs, crayons and computers waiting for them at school back home! After a 2008 addition to the museum, it now houses a separate room with various pieces of important historical documents and artifacts relating to Eastham, including shipwrecks, Native American relics, farming equipment, and objects relating to school and daily life in the town.
