Twenty minutes from Victoria, Butchart Gardens is world-renowned for its 55 acres of themed gardens, including a tranquil Japanese garden, Italian, Mediterranean, Rose Garden, and Sunken Garden. Spring and summer are showier seasons, vibrant with color, but the gardens are open year-round and each season has its own appeal. Meander along curving paths, cross pretty Japanese bridges, and scramble down steps into the Sunken Garden, Butchart’s signature garden reclaimed from limestone quarry. Make a day trip from Victoria on public transportation or dedicated shuttle buses. Bear in mind, summertime gets crowded. A shoulder-season visit might be more enjoyable.
