Byrd Theater

2908 West Cary Street, Richmond, VA

Want to experience a quintessential slice of Richmond? Then plan to take in a movie at the stunning Byrd Theater. Named after one of the Richmond founders — William Bryd — stepping into this grand dame is like stepping back in time. Opening in the heyday of the Roaring ‘20s, the Bryd is dripping in the same architecture today as when she first lit up the Richmond nights. Her opening movie — “Waterfront” — was shown on Christmas Eve 1928 and was the first in a long line of movies shown at the Bryd continuously ever since.

If you don’t mind seeing current movies after they’ve hit their popularity-zenith, this is your theater. Along with current movies, the Byrd shows kids’ movies on Saturday mornings. And the price is almost too low to believe: $1.99 a person. Bring cash; credit cards aren’t accepted.
