Attraction

Cannonball House

118 Front Street, Lewes, DE

Built in 1765, the Cannonball House was once a home, restaurant, laundry store, and the major’s office, and is now home to the Lewes Historical Society’s maritime museum. There is an actual cannonball lodged in the outside of the home, but you may be surprised by its small size. The cannonball was lodged there during the British bombardment of Lewes in 1813, during the War of 1812. The people of Lewes and a volunteer militia were able to defend themselves against the British until the war ended in 1815 with no causalities. Visitors will find exhibits from maritime history, art and memorabilia inside the house and museum.
