Cape Fear Museum

814 Market St., Wilmington, NC

If you’re trying to get the kids excited about going to a science and history museum, tell them instead that it’s the Michael Jordan Museum. That’s what some locals call it. Yes, Michael Jordan, the basketball superstar, is a native of Wilmington. He donated much of the funding for the Discovery Gallery that highlights the flora and fauna of the region. But before you enter that, there’s a nice exhibit on Jordan’s childhood in Wilmington, including his kindergarten graduation certificate.

Upstairs, test your TV trivia with an exhibit on some of the many television shows and movies that have been shot here. Otherwise, the museum is very hands-on and focuses on history and science. Toss a bean bag into a monster sized Venus fly-trap (unique to this region) and work your way through the history of the Cape Fear River basin on two levels.

If it’s a lovely day, you’ll enjoy the interactive garden outside.
