Christ Church

6329 Frederica Rd, Saint Simons Island, GA

One of the oldest churches in Georgia, Christ Church has continuously held services since 1736. The gorgeous church grounds are surrounded by giant live oaks covered in Spanish moss. While this isn’t the original church building that stands today, this church was completed in 1884 by Anson Phelps Dodge Jr., who built it in honor of his wife, Ellen, who died before its completion. Dodge had Ellen encrypted in the altar and when Dodge died 14 years later, his second wife moved the former couple to a gravesite next to the church so they could always remain together. The gravesite, which also includes Dodge’s mother, second wife and child, remains next to the church today.

The church, which looks like the hull of a ship inside, is constructed from gorgeous heart pine (which can no longer be found today) and not a nail was used to build the church. Every beam was constructed with tongue and groove and no paint or stain has ever touched the wood. Insects cannot even penetrate this wood.
