Fisherman’s Bastion

Szentharomsag Ter, Budapest

You’ll refer to this majestic looking building as a castle, but then locals won’t know what you are referring to when you ask for directions. While it looks like a castle, this is actually the Fisherman’s Bastion, built in the early 19th century to celebrate Hungary’s millennium in the area where former city walls protected Buda. This area was protected by the fisherman, thus the name. The current structure was restored following the Second World War, after it was nearly destroyed. It features seven turrets to represent the seven tribes who founded Hungary in 895. The attraction is visible from the Danube and is nestled on a very steep hill on the Buda side of the city.
