Family Activities:

Flor de Cana Rum Factory Tour

While the adults will clearly be more interested in a tour of a rum distillery, children are welcome and may even enjoy the tour themselves. The award-winning Flor de Cana is the only rum consumed in Nicaragua and dates back to 1890. Today, the fifth generation of the Pellas family continues to run the slow-aged rum distilling process. The premium rum with no added sugar is exported to more than 40 countries from the factory situated less than 40 minutes outside of Leon.

The 90-minute distillery tour takes visitors through the history and rum aging process of Flor de Cana. Visitors will ride on a tram car through the facility, watch a short film and walk through the American white oak barrels stacked up high as the rum inside ages to perfection. And there is of course a taste testing portion of the tour as well. The tour ends in the souvenir shop (which also happens to be the biggest rum barrel in the world), where bottles of rum are ready for purchase at an inexpensive rate.

Three tours are scheduled daily at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Reservations are required.
