Attraction

Fort Caroline National Memorial

12713 Fort Caroline Rd., Jacksonville, FL

French Huguenots originally settled the Jacksonville area in the sixteenth century, creating the first, albeit short-lived, Protestant colony in North America. Northeast of downtown, this 680-acre park honors their brave new world with a fort exhibit, nature trail, and museum of ecology and historical French and native American exhibits, including an impressive 6-foot owl totem.

The site holds the visitor center for the 46,000-acre Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, which also contains wilderness trails and the Ribault Monument.
