First opening in 1963, the Goodspeed Opera House is a landmark theatre located on the Connecticut River. Housed in a historic building that was built in 1876 by William H. Goodspeed, a shipping and banking magnate who loved theater, the Goodspeed Opera House underwent a variety of transformations before being restored as theater. Since 1963, Goodspeed has produced more than 250 musicals and has earned two special Tony Awards. Shows are still performed here, but tours of the theater are also available on Saturdays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
