The Great Orme

Attraction

Located at the edge of the Victorian seaside town of Llandudno, Great Orme offers a mountain (literally) of attractions, and traversing this limestone headland is half the fun. You can drive, take Britain’s longest funicular tramway, fly above the Orme in a cable car, or hike one of three scenic trails to the summit. Best bet: hike one direction, then take the tram or cable car for the other. For an adventure- filled day, begin at the Tram’s base, Victoria Station, and hike up the mountain. Stop to play Great Orme’s Pitch & Putt nine-hole mountainside course. Continue up Orme and visit the Tram’s Halfway Station exhibit for a look at how these trams work differently from others around the world.

Across the road from the Halfway Station, take the self-guided underground tour of Great Orme Ancient Mine, and learn how rock was turned to metal. Discounted family rates are available. From there, follow the footpath to Orme’s Summit Complex, where you can finally rest. There’s a cafe, boxing-themed bar, shops, playground, a very mini-golf course (better for small kids than Pitch & Putt), and spectacular views of Snowdonia and Anglesey. Note: the climb is a steep mile-plus, so you might want to reverse the direction, especially with a stroller. Most Great Orme attractions open in March and many close by early November. You can still hike Orme any time, or visit Llandudno Ski Slope and Snowboard Center for winter fun.
