Hallgrimskirkja

Skolavorduholti, Reykjavik 121

Reykjavik’s skyline features the steeple of this church, one of Iceland’s most visited buildings. The church is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter and until 9 p.m. in the summer, and for about $8 visitors can climb the 244-foot-tall church tower for views of the city. A national monument, the church is named for Iceland’s religious poet, Hallgimur Petursson. Construction of the church began in 1945 and was completed in 1986, with an impressive and unique design not replicated anywhere else in the world.
