There are many caves throughout the Central Highlands region of Barbados, but this is the country’s — and really the Caribbean’s — premiere show cave. And it’s so much more than a cave tour. An expansive visitor center, opened in late 2010, allows guests to experience some of the natural richness above ground before heading 160 feet below. Take an elevator if you have a stroller. Otherwise, take the wooden stairway down into the gully where the cave entrance is located. You’ll pass through woodlands with plenty of interpretive signs to teach a gentle lesson or two as you go. At the bottom, there’s a good chance you’ll see a troop of Barbados green monkeys playing in the trees. Wander through outdoor exhibits, enjoy snacks and soft drinks at shaded picnic tables, or pick up some handcrafted souvenirs in a pleasant plaza setting. For the less adventurous, a 45-minute tram tour carries you through the biggest rooms and past the most fascinating formations. Two stops allow you to get out and explore waterfalls and crystal clear ponds. For the more adventurous, take a “walking” tour of the cave that will force you on your belly and through water as you explore the cave by headlamp. Only those 16 and older may participate in this tour. There’s also a fun bat program for kids 7 to 11 years old.
