This fascinating Big Island park is home to two active volcanoes, Kalauea and Mauna Loa, the former being one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. The park features an incredibly diverse landscape, with rainforest and desert, lava tubes and steaming craters, and even a field of petroglyphs. There are more than 150 hiking trails here, ranging in difficulty from easy, such as the hike to the Thurston Lava Tube, and longer hikes, like Mauna Iki. Wilderness trails. Most of the easier trails are well marked and well maintained. Devastation and Waldron Ledge trails are paved, and perfect for families with strollers or wheelchairs. Trail maps are available at the visitor center. Try to spend at least a full day at this unique national park.
