The House of Seven Gables

115 Derby Street, Salem, 01970, MA

Located on the harbor, the House of Seven Gables is a National Historic Landmark District that offers a look into Salem history. The house was built in 1668 and is the oldest surviving wooden mansion in New England. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote his novel of the same name after being inspired by the property in which he was born in 1804. Guided tours are offered and last about 35 minutes, and events are often held here year-round. Guests can see what life was like in the early 19th century and can take home souvenirs, books and other knick-knacks at the gift shop. Admission is free for all. The house is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
