Set in the hills east of Kyoto, this World Heritage-listed temple is one of the area’s main cultural and historical attractions. Preserved streets lined with shops and food stalls lead up to the temple itself, and you’ll find all sorts of amulets and tkochkes to tempt the kids here.

The temple was built in 780 AD and has a large wooden terrace where you can get an incredible view of the surrounding foliage, temples and pagodas.
