Kura Hulanda Museum

Klipstraat 9, Willemstad

This museum is a tough one for most adults, so parents should be very alert to the emotional impact a visit here may have on their children, especially the younger ones. Located on the Punda side of Willemstad, this museum interprets the African slave trade and the role the Dutch people played in that harsh period of human history. After Africans were captured on the Ivory Coast, they were loaded aboard ships and transported to Curacao for an “adjustment period.” Basically, this is where the spirit of the African people was broken, and the techniques used to do so are on full display. Beginning in the 1600s and ending with an exhibit devoted to Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S., the museum teaches an unforgettable lesson in world history and human rights — a lesson of which only parents can determine if their children are ready to comprehend.
