Family Activities:

Lake Atitlan

Attraction

Fathoms deep and dreamy to gaze at, the famed volcanic Lake Atitlan holds wondrous water-based adventures for your family. Ringed by steep, green/blue hills, it’s known for its Mayan villages and volcanoes with stunning pointed peaks. From Panajachel, the biggest town on the lake, you can rent kayaks, canoes and standup paddleboards from the docks (try Alquiler de Kayaks on the docks for affordable rentals,), and row your way to togetherness.

Do hop aboard one of many small ferry boats to visit one of many fascinating little Maya villages across the lake. Boat rides take about half an hour, depending on your destination, and cost about $7 per person, round trip. Snap photos, splash around, and see with your own eyes why Aldous Huxley said Atitlan “touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque.”
